HP Mini 210-1020ez Wi-Fi

First of all, hello everyone! (This is my first post here.)
I recently acquired an old HP Mini 210-1020ez netbook, which I'm trying to bring back to life. After installing Trisquel Mini 11.0.1 LTS Aramo on it, everything seems to work just fine, except the Wi-Fi card. Just to make sure the card wasn't damaged or anything else, I used a non-free distro to check: the card works, so I guessed it would have been related to the abscence of non-free drivers/firmwares.
The card in question is a Broadcom 4312, which then I further identified using:
lspci -nn -d 14e4:
Which outputs:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev01)
Looking online I found out that the card should be supported by the b43 drivers: https://wireless.docs.kernel.org/en/latest/en/users/drivers/b43.html.
I also found out about the OpenFWWF project (http://netweb.ing.unibs.it/openfwwf/), where free firmwares for the BCM43XX cards have been developed. Shouldn't these in association with b43 make the card work?
In case this should not work, I could be able to swap the card with a Realtek 6317A-RTL8188EE 802.11b/g/n, which is supposed to run without problems: https://h-node.org/wifi/view/en/1637/Realtek-Semiconductor-Co---Ltd--RTL8188EE-Wireless-Network-Adapter.
In that case my question here is: would the card be compatible with the antennas already present in the netbook? Could it be possible to replace the previous one without the BIOS blocking it?
Many thanks in advance for your time.
Hi Egon-
This may be of help or not. This card was tested on Trisquel 7.0 and didn't work. But we are now at 11.0.
Model: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
Does it work with free software?
no
----
The good news is the this card is now working on Linux Mint as of July 2025- https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=449587
Note; They filed a bug report on this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/2116888
Good luck!
Hello IBM1130!
Yes, the H-Node was the starting point of my research on the matter.
About the other two links you you posted: aren't the broadcom-sta-dkms, firmware-b43-installer, b43-fwcutter, broadcom-wl & b43-firmware packets made by - or depending on Broadcom and then non-free pieces of software? Or am I wrong?
If possible, I would like to stick to free/libre software to solve this issue.
Anyway, thanks for replying!
Whether the BIOS would block the replacement of the wifi card or not is usually not indicated in any manual, so perhaps the only way to know is to try.
I found a manual of that laptop, it says that the WLAN antenna is with 2 connectors. If you want to try replacing the wifi card with another one, if the connectors fit and only 2 antennas are needed, I see no reason why there could be a problem. The manual I found says some models have instead an Atheros 9285 wifi card. Such a card is listed on H-node as working with free software. If the BIOS is blocking some cards, there is chance that it is not blocking that one, but not sure.
Ok, thanks! I'll keep that in mind in case no free driver/firmware is found and the replacement card I already got around won't be allowed by the BIOS.
Here is a simple solution-
https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb
BCM4312 is not listed as a "known supported board" in the description of the openfwwf package, which is installed by default in Trisquel 11.
I believe RTL8188EE should work as reported on h-node thanks to the work put in early 2018 into GNU Linux-libre 4.16-gnu: https://www.fsfla.org/pipermail/linux-libre/2018-April/003284.html
@IBM1130:
Thanks for the suggestion, but this solution highly exceed my budget for this project. I also would prefer not to have any external dongle on the device.
@Magic Banana:
I see. I will try to install the RTL8188EE as soon as possible and I'll update you on the matter. Thank you!
