Out of disk space when installing new updates

On a vanilla 5.5 install it seems the default partitioning scheme allocates ~2.71GiB to / (total initially allocated on a virtual machine: 8GB).

Perhaps a minimal size for [total space-(/home)] should be enforced so the system can be updated even in minimal installs (ie. virtual machines, headless, etc.)
