Are the programmes in Trisquel chosen by users, or are they imposed on us without any freedom of choice?

Hello everyone.

This is a friendly yet logical question that has been on my mind for a while.

What criteria do developers use when selecting programmes for new ISOs, and why?

It seems to me that it would be sensible to ASK users which programmes they find EASIER to use. Why isn’t this done on the forum, as is usually the case with testing new ISOs?

There are a lot of genuinely poor programmes; by ‘poor’ I mean bloated ones, such as Pidgin (an XMPP client), which could be replaced with Dino https://dino.im/, or nothing at all could be installed in the new ISOs – the user can then install whatever they deem necessary for themselves.
Plus, unnecessary programmes create additional dependencies, etc.

I prefer Gajim. I use Gajim for messaging and Cheogram CLI Dialer (CCD) for calls. Dino doesn't have enough features for me. It lacks commands.

I think that there are several ISOs provided each directed at a different user. For example, the LXDE full stack Trisquel or the full stack Triskel is obviously directed at new users. These users are coming from Windows and expect certain basic applications such as a web browser and an office suite. Not providing this would be a disservice.

For us advanced users there is a net install that provides an extremely minimal operating system to build on top of with no assumptions made at all.

It is possible to debloat the full stack install but you should really consider the netinstall.

I prefer to dogfood what is recommended to beginner users. Therefore, I use the default MATE environment.

With the netinstall, if you select MATE, you will get the same like if you use the default Trisquel ISO. I use the netinstall this way because it easily allows to have a ciphered volume that includes a swap volume and a joint root/home volume, while I never managed to get that with the "something else" partitioning option of the main installer.

When I install Trisquel for a server, I select the Trisquel console environment, I don't try to do anything manually.

For us advanced users there is a net install that provides an extremely minimal operating system to build on top of with no assumptions made at all.

For that, you can try Trisquel even without the console enviroment, or Parabola with only the base package.

Hi Avron,
Thanks for your feedback.

Could you please tell me how you use the CLI on the server?
Do you download the ‘netinstall’ ISO, and what happens next?
I can’t see an option to install Trisquel via the terminal.

Could you please tell me how you use the CLI on the server?

I only did that with servers at home, so I just plugged in a USB key with the netinstall ISO, and connected a display and a keyboard. I also tried on a rockpro64 (but it failed at some point) but I did not connect a display and a keyboard (I tried but it did not work), I use a serial connection with terminal on another machine.

I've had a similar perspective. I've started with the default Trisquel environment. Then, later, thought that I would like to remove some of the default programs because I did not use them, then moved onto thinking that I would like to have a more curated environment. So I backed up /home and went for a Net Install --- but before I got there, I used the default Trisquel install and it was fine.

Hello Gnufairy,

I agree with you, and it makes perfect sense that a user who decides to switch from Windows to Trisquel or from Ubuntu to Trisquel would want a basic set of programmes to view photos, videos and PDFs, work on documents, and stay in touch with developers via an IRC client or with friends using an XMPP or Matrix client, and so on

If they are not satisfied with what is installed by default in the ISO, they can use the ‘netinstall’ option and then install whatever they like.

Let’s think logically: if we’re basing this on the programmes currently in the repository—and we’re talking about lightweight programmes with minimal code—then Pidgin with Facebook and Google plugins isn’t the best choice!

Overall, the software selection is good and well-thought-out – and I’m referring to ISO Mate – but I think it would be right to talk to the community before building a new ISO, to find out what users like and don’t like; I don’t see anything critical in that)

It would also be great to continue with the STYLE concept. Thanks again – it’s much better now than it was. If we could work on the theme (Look and Feel => Appearance => Trisquel) so that everything looks good by default, the distro would become very attractive, second only to KDE Plasma ))
